Ecca Vandal New York Concert reviews
Gammage is Certainly Unique
I appreciated the detailed information via email ahead of the concert, which conveyed a clear message: Arrive on time. This was my first time at the widely acclaimed ASU Gammage. I arrived early, about 6:40 PM, only to be greeted by a crowd of people gathered outside the main entry. Three security structures were in place, but they did not open until 7 P.M. Temps are still pretty warm in the Valley of the Sun, and I saw many people in the crowd fanning themselves and wiping sweat from their brow.
After going through security and finally entering the building, I found the entire place crowded with people wandering and wondering what to do and where to go--bathrooms, merch line, concessions. Many of us were looking for the line to enter, people were leaning against walls and sitting on steps drinking their cocktails. Ushers blocked doors to the theatre until 7:30 PM. I've never been to a venue with this type of disorganized "structure" which seemed counter to email messaging.
Gammage practices seemed to go against their own rules. We were told to arrive early or we would not be let into the show, yet many people arrived late for the opening act and were allowed in, fumbling to their seats in the dark. It was extremely distracting. The ushers did a great job handling this as well as people using phones.
The acoustics at Gammage were terrible, despite the historical nature and beauty of the venue. The couple next to me agreed that they could not hear when Marc Cohn was speaking during the opening act. This was true for the amazing Ecca Vandal as well; some of that could have been due to the noise level of the crowd.
Marc and Ecca are great artists, and their shows were fabulous. I'm not impressed by the venue.
